What to tell us
A few details make a problem much easier to track down. If you are reporting one, it helps to include:
- The device and browser you were using, with the version if you know it.
- What you expected the compass to do, and what it did instead.
- Whether you had allowed motion and location access.
- Where you were — indoors, in a vehicle, near steel — since surroundings affect the reading more than anything else.
Before you write about an inaccurate reading
Most unexpected headings have a local cause rather than a software one. Holding the device flat, stepping a few metres away from metal and onto open ground, and moving the device through a figure-eight to recalibrate the magnetometer resolves the large majority of them. If the reading is still wrong after that, please do tell us — and include where you were, because declination varies by location.
